Forest Whitaker Cast as Doc Broadus in George Foreman Biopic

Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker is about to get in the ring. The Godfather of Harlem star has recently joined the untitled biopic about two-time world heavyweight champion George Foreman, according to The Wrap. Whitaker is reportedly set to play Doc Broadus, who was the person who introduced Foreman to boxing and would become both his trainer and mentor. The role was originally set to be filled by Michael K. Williams, who tragically passed away last September.

The film is said to follow Foreman’s journey all the way from his childhood to him becoming the oldest heavyweight champion in boxing history at 45. The film will also depict such major events in Foreman’s life as becoming an Olympic Gold medalist, boxing Muhammad Ali in the famous "Rumble in the Jungle," and his time as a preacher.

Whitaker is set to join Khris Davis (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Sullivan Jones (Halston), who will be playing Foreman and Ali respectively, with the project due to start filming in early 2022.

In a statement to The Wrap about Whitaker’s casting, the film’s director George Tillman Jr. (The Hate U Give) had this to say:

“I’m excited to work with Forest, as I’ve wanted to work with him for as long as I can remember, I’m so inspired by his talents and his vast body of work. I’m thrilled that he’s joining our cast to play the iconic role of Doc Broadus as we embark on this journey to tell the incredible true story of George Foreman.”

The screenplay is written by Frank Baldwin (Your Honor) and Tillman, with the original screenplay by Dan Gordon (Murder in the First). Peter Guber and David Zelon will be serving as producers on the project.

The film is set to be released in theaters on March 24, 2023.
