December is quickly approaching and that once again means that there will be a ton of new movie releases battling for your heart this holiday season. One of those high-profile films is the longly awaited Kingsman prequel The King’s Man directed once again by Matthew Vaughn who helmed the first two films. The film is now less than a month away and to start the explosive countdown, 20th Century Studios has released a new trailer highlighting the return of the series’ staple mayhem, lighthearted humor, and "the formation of the greatest spy agency" come to life.
Throughout the footage, we see new glimpses of the star-studded cast of Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Djimon Hounsou, Matthew Goode, Stanley Tucci, Daniel Brühl, and an unrecognizable Rhya Ifans as Rasputin. This is “World War 1 according to the Kingsmen," with the trailer presenting the stylized action, foul-mouthed antics, and “shady characters” deep in the trenches of one of the darkest times of human history.
With explosions and a high body count, the trailer promises “a heartwarming tale of killing, sex, and deceit” for all your friends to enjoy. This is a trailer with a ton of action, but it is also a trailer that ends with Fiennes’ character getting licked by a goat and getting kicked off a cliff by the same animal. Anyone who was worried that this would not feel like a Kingsman movie can rest easy seeing this.
The franchise started in 2014 with Kingsman: The Secret Service which was based on the comic book series The Secret Service by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. The film was beloved by both critics and audiences alike and helped jump-start the career of actor Taron Egerton. It received a sequel in 2017's Kingsman: The Golden Circle that arguably failed to recapture the magic of the original, but this prequel looks to re-energize the franchise as the series does not look to be going anywhere any time soon. Back in December of last year CEO of production company Marv Group Zygi Kamasa said Vaughn had “something like seven more Kingsman films” in the works. This includes the eventual Kingsman 3.
If Marv wants to make those seven films, along with the other TV projects also in development, The King’s Man needs to be a hit. With massive blockbusters like Spider-Man: No Way Home coming out five days before this film, the well-dressed spy agency is fighting a war on multiple fronts. After many delays, The King’s Man releases only in theaters on December 22, just in time to make your Christmas vacation a little zanier. Ralph Fiennes wearing the hell out of a leather jacket is such a good vibe.
